The Digital Safety Passport for railAlert

Stichting railAlert is tasked with promoting workplace safety during rail infrastructure projects across the Netherlands. Collaborating closely with key stakeholders such as ProRail, railAlert ensures safety standards are upheld on and around the railway. To replace the error- and fraud-prone paper safety passport, Nsecure developed the Digital Safety Passport (DVP) on behalf of ProRail and railAlert.

This innovative system ensures that contractors, subcontractors, and workers are demonstrably legal and qualified to work near railway infrastructure. By integrating various credentials and systems into one unified platform, the Digital Safety Passport delivers enhanced reliability and efficiency.

Agile Development for a Comprehensive System

Using the Agile Scrum methodology, multidisciplinary teams—including interaction designers, developers, architects, and a Scrum Master—collaborated to create the DVP. The system comprises three key components:

1. A portal for management and oversight.
2. A physical card for workers.
3. A Scan App for on-site data verification.

Clear Insights with the Digital Safety Passport

The DVP portal provides employers and supervisors with a comprehensive overview of notifications, employees, violations, and reports. By connecting with various corporate and certification systems, the portal determines whether an individual qualifies for a Digital Safety Passport.

Key functionalities include:

• Automatic issuance of cards upon meeting requirements, enabled through integration with Dataclient (registration system) and Nsecure’s card production system.
• Monitoring card validity, production status, and on-site personnel counts.

The portal is an indispensable tool for organizations that need to ensure safety compliance on-site.

On-Site Data Verification

To complement the portal, Nsecure developed an innovative Scan App. During inspections, railAlert supervisors can use the app to scan the QR code on workers’ safety cards, instantly accessing their credentials.

• Verification of worker data and access credentials.
• Tracking attendance and recording violations.
• Reducing errors and fraud to enhance site safety.
• Compatibility with iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, with offline functionality.

Achievements of the Digital Safety Passport

The Digital Safety Passport has helped railAlert achieve its primary goal of enhancing safety around rail infrastructure. Additional project objectives, including operational efficiency and fraud prevention, were exceeded through effective collaboration between stakeholders.

The DVP’s success earned it the prestigious Dutch Interactive Award 2015 in the B2B & Professional Services category.
