NAM and Nsecure Create Greater Safety with Unique E-Learning

An Incident-Free Environment Through the Safety Center

What’s the best way to ensure safety rules truly stick? By experiencing them in an interactive and accessible way. NAM’s Safety and Experience Center in Groningen builds on the success of Shell Pernis’ pioneering Safety Center.

The Impact of the Safety Center on Awareness

When it opened in 2014, the Shell Pernis Safety Center was the world’s first of its kind, setting a global trend in the industry. In 2019, the center underwent significant updates, adding an experience center and fully revamping its e-learning platform. Since then, more than 60,000 employees and contractors have completed mandatory safety training, leading to measurable improvements in safety awareness and an overall enhancement of workplace safety standards.

Nsecure played a critical role in this achievement by developing the software for workflow, identity management, and e-learning. Through expertise in access and safety, Nsecure ensured these elements complemented rather than hindered each other. The key? Seamless integration of registration, digital personal dossiers, e-learning, and the underlying physical access control system.

From Dry Theory to Real-Life Scenarios

Both Shell and NAM operate in the petrochemical industry, facing similar safety risks. As a joint venture, with Shell owning half of NAM, the NAM Safety Center mirrors Shell Pernis’ facility but is adapted to NAM’s branding. This reflects a “why change a winning formula?” philosophy.

The basic idea behind NAM’s Safety and Experience Center is straightforward: real-life scenarios and gamified learning make theory and practical training more memorable than traditional, labor-intensive safety training methods.

Moreover, the training is tailored to participants’ roles. For example, groundworkers learn different safety protocols than electricians, ensuring relevance and effectiveness.

Accreditation in 6 Simple Steps

Employees and contractors follow these steps when undergoing safety training at the NAM Safety Center:

  1. Registration: Contractors sign up in advance.
  2. E-Learning: Participants complete role-specific e-learning modules via tablet, phone, or computer.
  3. Exam: They take an exam to test their knowledge.
  4. Experience Route: Using a QR code, participants navigate the NAM Safety Center.
  5. Scenarios: Depending on their role, participants complete safety scenarios individually or in groups.
  6. Certification: After passing the exam and completing scenarios, contractors and employees receive certification, granting them access to the relevant worksite.

This system gives NAM comprehensive insights into participants’ training progress through reports and a dashboard.

Smarter Software for Enhanced Safety

Nsecure integrated its access, safety, software platform, and IT development expertise into the digital solutions for NAM and Shell’s Safety Centers. This holistic approach added value at every stage of the process.

Cedric van Riemsdijk, Lead IT Business Development at Nsecure, explains:
“Through our workflow and identity management platforms, we’ve achieved the perfect balance between access, safety, and hospitality for NAM and Shell. The e-learning module in YIM enhances knowledge levels, fosters a safety culture, and contributes to an incident-free workplace. With this platform, NAM and Shell can continuously adopt new technologies and interfaces, ensuring continuity and consistent safety advancements.”

From E-Learning to Integrated Security Management

Safety experience training is particularly valuable for high-risk industries. However, the modular design of the e-learning platform makes it versatile for various organizations, from small businesses to multinationals, and industries ranging from finance to facilities management.

The platform offers:

  • Standardized training for all employees.
  • Custom training for visitors.
  • Remote instructions for off-site staff.

Additionally, bespoke solutions such as continuous e-learning, gamification, and a complete (online) safety training center are available. These features help mitigate risks, improve access and safety processes, and ensure compliance.

By combining expertise and innovation, NAM, Shell, and Nsecure are raising the bar for safety standards, creating safer, more efficient work environments for all stakeholders.
