Advanced Protection for Radioactive Materials at Amsterdam UMC

Custom Security Solution with Intrusion Detection for Tracer Centrum Amsterdam

Top-Tier Security for Medical Isotopes

The Imaging Center at Amsterdam UMC is a unique facility, combining the most advanced imaging techniques for healthcare and scientific research. It is the only place in the world where treatment, research, and production coexist under one roof. The third floor, known as the Tracer Centrum Amsterdam, is dedicated to research, drug development, and production of medical isotopes and tracers. To safeguard radioactive materials, Nsecure delivered a sophisticated security solution, leveraging its extensive experience and expertise in security and compliance to address this highly specialized challenge.

Highest-Level Security for Medical Isotopes

Strict regulations govern the production, storage, and transportation of radioactive materials. This posed a significant challenge for Amsterdam UMC, which needed the best possible solution to secure its radioactive storage vault (RA-kluis).

“The goal was to create a tailor-made solution using the minimum necessary hardware while maintaining user-friendliness,”
— Frank Schut, Field Engineer at Nsecure.

Previously reliant on external sources for medical isotopes, the Tracer Centrum Amsterdam can now produce these on-site. In addition to cutting-edge imaging equipment, the facility houses several cyclotrons (particle accelerators) to produce medical isotopes. These isotopes are the raw materials for radiopharmaceuticals—radioactive compounds used in diagnosing diseases such as cancer.

The isotopes are transported via pipelines to the RA-kluis at the Tracer Centrum Amsterdam, a fully automated process controlled by advanced computer systems. This innovation necessitates the highest level of security for such a critical space.

A Custom Solution with Intrusion Detection

Nsecure was tasked with designing a security solution to protect the RA-kluis and prevent hazardous situations. This unique requirement demanded an equally distinctive solution, designed to minimize disruption to the center’s workflow.

“We developed a system that secures the RA-vaults when isotopes are present. If the vaults are empty, employees can access them without additional security measures. The intrusion detection system dynamically adjusts based on the radiation levels of the stored materials,”
— Frank Schut.

Cross Beam Technology with Intrusion Detection

Using its extensive security expertise, Nsecure implemented a fully automated and highly specialized system in line with the client’s requirements.

The solution incorporates advanced Cross Beam Technology:

  • Active Infrared Detection Sets: Installed around the RA-kluis to detect access when radiation levels are high.
  • Precision Detection Field: Creates an unmanipulatable barrier capable of identifying even the smallest objects, such as a screwdriver or a piece of paper.

This unique intrusion detection solution ensures compliance with regulations while guaranteeing employee safety.

Tailored Security as a Masterpiece

The RA-kluis security project at Amsterdam UMC exemplifies Nsecure’s innovative approach. By seamlessly integrating into the operational processes at Amsterdam UMC, Nsecure demonstrates its ability to transform complex challenges into bespoke solutions.

“With the specialized domain knowledge of our field engineers and project managers, Nsecure delivers custom security solutions that are nothing short of a masterpiece,”
— Frank Schut.
